Sisters with Hats, we need you!!

I grew up in the age of Sisters with Hats...the church going, bible quoting, butt-whipping mothers/aunts/grandmother who wore hats like helmets while they prayed for our souls all day on Sunday.

I am here to tell you that those prayers worked, but they did not just pray, they nourished our bodies and feed our souls.

Sisters with Hats would get this situation straightened out with the quickness. They brooked no bull-shit, pulled no punches and handed out stern discipline and delicious mac and cheese in equal measure.

Lessons I learned at the feet of Sisters With Hats need to be re-taught today.

Compassion was the first thing my hat wearing Mother taught me. That we are are not alone on this earth and therefore, it behooves us to look after the weaker even when you want to kick your baby sister down the stairs.

Responsibility was also drummed into our head, we did not always listen or admit it, but at least we know what it is.

Kindness, in every neighborhood and on every block there was a family of many that Sisters with Hats would take under their wing and feed.  No one was turned away from the dinner table.

Service, Sisters with Hats stepped up in any hour of need, be it birthing, wedding or burying. They could be counted on in every emergency to provide a strong arm, covered casserole or bail money for your boyfriend.

We miss you and wish that the hat wearing Sisters would come back in style.
